Scrimshaw – Black Jack Anderson
Ruthless , murderous and cruel yet charismatic and passionate, Black Jack Anderson ruled the islands and waters off WA’s Recherche Archipelago in the early 1800’s.
Australia’s only recorded pirate John Anderson was an African American from Massachusetts who limped into King George Sound aboard a crippled whaler called the vigilant in 1826.
That night while drinking at the store , Black Jack was blamed for the death of another sailor during a fight. He and several other men stole a vessel and sailed to the Recherche Archipelago off Esperance , with its uncharted small islands.
Middle Island – famous for its pink lake was his base for a brutal reign spanning over ten years of sealing and ruling by violence.
Anderson is said to be buried somewhere on the island after members of his crew murdered him.
